Language, culture, and context

Strengthen speaking, reading, and writing skills while studying literature, film, linguistics, and cultural history. Coursework emphasizes global perspectives, critical analysis, and multicultural competence across Spanish- and French-speaking regions.

Begin with language courses that build advanced proficiency through discussion-based classes in Spanish or French. Later, in upper-division courses, you’ll apply that fluency to literature, cultural studies, and linguistics, engaging disciplinary theories and methods beyond language acquisition.

Students are strongly encouraged to study abroad in Spanish- or French-speaking regions. Programs across Latin America, Spain, France, Africa, and the Caribbean allow you to deepen language proficiency while studying culture, history, and literature in immersive, real-world settings.

Spanish & French Studies pairs well with studies in linguistics, Group Language, Diplomacy & World Affairs, Urban & Environmental Policy, public health, education, and environmental science, allowing you to combine language study with professional and interdisciplinary interests.

Working with Spanish professors has been a joy. The professors I've taken classes with are very passionate about their work and their classes. I have always felt comfortable going into office hours, and I feel supported both academically and personally.
